Minas Gerais, Estado natal da artista, recebe este nome por ter sido a mineração a principal atividade da região no período colonial brasileiro, sendo o ouro o motor de enriquecimento da colônia e colonizador. Especializados no feitio da atividade, muitos escravizados foram trazidos de regiões específicas de África, embarcados em Costa da Mina, hoje Gana, Togo, Benim e Nigéria, e nesta província explorados em nome desse enriquecimento. Eles eram conhecidos como “escravos minas”.

A performance Minas reflete o processo que significou essa exploração entre os séculos XVI e XIX e como essa região do Brasil carrega em si permanentes e atrozes vestígios da história brasileira e sua população.

Nesta ação de longa duração, a artista utiliza materiais que remetem ao ouro para construir diversas cruzes no solo, evocando e repensando esse passado de violência e espólio.

Minas [2018]

Minas Gerais, home state of the artist, gets its name because it was mining the main activity of the region in the Brazilian colonial period, being the gold the engine of enrichment of the colony and colonizer. Specialized in the activity, many enslaved were brought from specific regions of Africa, shipped in Costa da Mina, now Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria, and in this province exploited in the name of this enrichment. They were known as “Minas slaves”.

The performance Minas reflects the process that meant this exploitation between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries and how this region of Brazil carries in itself permanent and atrocious traces of Brazilian history and its population.

In this long-lasting action, the artist uses materials that refer to gold to build several crosses on the ground, evoking and rethinking this past of violence and booty.
